anxiety series

Though captivating through photography, this series comes alive when the viewer interacts and finds their own reflection in the shards of mirror. I have always believed that art is meant to be SEEN, to interact with, and holds a very vulnerable view in the artist's mind in every brushstroke.

SELF REFLECTION

I created a painting in 2018 titled 'Self Reflection'. Though captivating through photography, is intended for the viewer to interact and find their own reflection in the shards of mirror. This piece came alive the first time that I showed it at an art show and started to get very charged responses from those who found themselves reflected back in the piece. I have always believed that art is meant to be SEEN, to interact with. This piece is one in a series titled 'The Anxiety Series', inspired by a conversation with my art student in high school who was living in fear after the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. We worked together to take her internalized anxieties onto paper and canvas. I began interviewing and portraiting member of my family and community, and creating pieces where the mirrors are placed to reflect the subject's own anxieties, internal, external or otherwise, reflecting back at the world. Some find it disturbing, some exciting - but most importantly, ART is meant to PROVOKE!

GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS

I feel it's artists' responsibility to make creations not only reflecting themselves, but to the world around us. I created this triptic to reflect the steps I must take as a human and as woman of the time. Art history is the story of human history and the story of PEOPLE. The art we leave as our reflection is still in our hands. NO ONE can sign a bill, pass a law, or post a tweet to silence artists.
